GAYFIELDS CALL THE COPS

2000 Individual Legion of Merit

GAYFIELDS CALL THE COPS (*Sleight of Hand LOM x Dixie Blue Duchess LOM) is a 1993 grey stallion, bred by Gail & Arthur Thomson and owned by Jackie Hubert Verkuyl at Goldhills Welsh, where he is the Section B herd sire.

Jackie first saw Cops as a two-year-old, on a visit to Gayfields. Looking out the kitchen window, she thought, wow - what a great looking mountain pony, and wondered why a Section A was hiding out at Gayfields. On closer inspection, it turned out that he was a not a mountain pony, but instead an extremely typey Section B, and at his mature height of 13.1 ˝ (AHSA permanent card) certainly not small.

After a season in Missouri, where he produced Gayfields’ junior stallion, JG Cops And Robbers, Call the Cops came to California! Cops has been extremely successful in the show ring up and down the west coast in the four years since that time. In his first year in California, Cops showed only in hand, and was the Pacific Coast High Point Section B Stallion and winner of the Farmore Farms overall Section B trophy, and SW Region Champion Section B Stallion a feat he repeated the following year. Cops’ first appearance in the performance arena came at age 5, where, due to his easy going nature and willingness to try everything, he made his debut in English Pleasure, Western Pleasure and Pleasure Driving. The year was quite successful, ending with Pacific Coast High Point Reserve Championships in all three divisions, and WPCSA Reserve Champion Section B Stallion. The following year was even more successful, with Championships in those same three performance divisions.

The year 2000 marked a change in direction for Call the Cops, concentrating only on driving, where he was first in 18 of 21 WPCSA Pleasure Driving classes, and 8 of 10 WPCSA Carriage driving rail classes, finishing 3rd in the nation in both divisions. He is hoping his driver, Jackie, will figure out how to drive cones some day soon! Cops was also shown successfully in open competition where his most exciting win was the Ventura County Fair, which hosts a very prestigious carriage driving show – Cops won the antique carriage driving class showing in a huge class against Friesians, Morgans, Hackney horses and ponies, and other Welsh, singles as well as pairs.

Cops’ winning personality and stylish performances have also introduced people to the Welsh breed - when one pony owner saw him at an open show, her comment was, "I’m not sure what that is, other than my dream pony!" She now owns a Welsh pony. Cops’ owner, Jackie says, "We are extremely proud to own this wonderful pony, and very pleased that we could help him become the first Individual Legion of Merit winner in the Western United States. Special thanks to Gail and Arthur for allowing us to purchase him. And congratulations to his Sire, Dam and full sister on their great accomplishments. We are happy to be part of such a great Welsh family."

When he is not busy showing, Cops helps out at home, teaching manners to the youngsters, but always making sure he gets his daily nap. Cops is also proving himself as a sire. His foals all have his outstanding Welsh type and friendly willing disposition. The future looks bright for this great young stallion, and 2001 may well bring a CDE or two and perhaps even a driving pair in Cops’ future.
