2002 Dam Legion of Merit

    LOUISIANA LAGNIAPPE (Brockwell Spider x Homestead Flirt), or "Lulu" as she is known, is 23 years old and still producing. Lulu’s owner, Cliff Merchant, rode and drove her to two AHSA Welsh Pleasure Horse of the Year Awards when those awards encompassed Driving, Trail, English and Western Pleasure classes.

    Lulu’s personality can be described as strong and determined, a combination which makes her "Queen of the Pasture" whatever pasture she happens to visit.

    Gayfields has leased Lulu from Cliff throughout her breeding career and has been a part of her history since before her birth. When Cliff outgrew his Sec. A he borrowed a B from Gayfields to show. Vanessa Vaile loaned her mare, Homestead Flirt, to Cliff to breed a B for himself and he paid Brockwell Spider’s stud fee by breaking a pony during the summer.

    Lulu has had a total of eleven foals…2 colts, 9 fillies, all carrying the Gayfields prefix. Only the two colts, Big Easy and The Kingfish and one filly, Prom Queen Wannabe have been sold, the other eight fillies being retained at Gayfields.

    Although nine of her children have points, four have the 300 each necessary for her Legion of Merit: Vindaloo, The Kingfish, Skip To My Lou and Prom Queen. Lulu, with a total of 4443 points, is more than halfway to an Award of Excellence.
