MARY’S PRINCE OF WALES
2001 Individual Legion of Merit
MARY’S PRINCE OF WALES (*Cyffylliog Pendefig x *Scole Sarah) is owned by John Levy of Los Altos, California. "Ed" as Prince of Wales is known, was foaled in 1990 at Mary’s Farm. Polly Swinerton, his breeder, elected to keep him as her farm stallion. Ed was shown only once as a two year old, winning his class at the Golden State Show in Pomona. He then spent several years doing stud duty at the farm. In 1996 Polly asked Pat Holmes to handle a dispersal of all her ponies and cobs as she was retiring from breeding Welsh. Pat decided that in order to sell this promising stallion he needed to show. Ed went to three shows in 1996, winning the English Pleasure division at the first and also finding himself a new owner. John Levy bought him July of 1996. In September Ed rewarded John by being Supreme Champion at the Western Nationals.
Since then Ed has been shown in breeding classes, Western Pleasure, English Pleasure, Carriage Driving and Pleasure Driving and has been a Champion in every pursuit. Pat showed Ed as a two year old and in 1996 but Ed’s main partner for his show career has been Laura Stevens who took over his showing and training in 1997. Together they have been Supreme or Reserve Supreme over twenty times.
In 1997 Ed received the USDF award for training level Dressage with rider JiJi Mellon. Ed has spent his entire show career at Heather Hill Farm, first for Polly and then for John. Heather Hill Farm has many show commitments and because Ed could not always have Laura’s and Pat’s undivided time he was shown by many people, a testament to his versatility and tractability.
Pat, Laura and Benjy would like to acknowledge and thank his riders, Molly Kretchmar, JiJi Mellon, Tammy Burgin and Gerald Verkuyl for their significant part in Ed’s achievements. Pat writes, "We are proud of Ed. He is the second ever Individual Legion of Merit Cob and the first West Coast bred winner as well as the first American bred Cob winner. At this time Ed is having a well earned vacation, mainly being driven for fun and trail ridden. He has breeding commitments for this spring and beyond that we will see. Ed is ready to do whatever we decide on."
