ROLLINGWOODS CHIPS AHOY

2001 Dam Legion of Merit

ROLLINGWOODS CHIPS AHOY (1984-1994) (Farnley Spyglass x Heatherstone Chocolate Chip) is owned by Rollingwoods Welsh Ponies. Dr. Ruth Wilburn tells us, "While getting started in the pony breeding business, we found a Section A mare for sale at a hunter barn. The mare was old but she had produced several nice Welsh hunter ponies by Farnley Spyglass under the Fiesta prefix. The owners had bred the mare to Farnley Spyglass again but were not sure if the mare was pregnant. We went to look at Heatherstone Chocolate Chip (a 1960 liver chestnut) - she was in good condition, had nice conformation and pedigree, and she was pregnant. The price was too good to pass up so we brought her home.

"Chocolate Chip produced a nice filly - a liver chestnut with silver mane and tail - which we named Rollingwoods Chips Ahoy. Lightly shown as a baby, Chipper (as we called her) was bred as a three year old to *Sleight of Hand LOM. We were thrilled when the first foal turned out to be a gorgeous palomino filly-Rollingwoods Lorna Doone LOM and decided that if she produced that well then a broodmare she would stay. We bred Chipper to *Sleight of Hand LOM and also *Pendock Masterpiece LOM over the next several years. She was an excellent broodmare never missing a year.

After she had produced six foals for us we bred her to Sleight once again and she was sent to the Davis family in TN where she died foaling the next year. Other than the ponies that made up the legs of her Legion of Merit, Chipper produced: Rollingwoods Chips Deluxe (by Sleight) shown successfully as Rollingwoods Three Wishes in the hunter world, Rollingwoods Selections (by Masterpiece) who is now a broodmare for Betty Benjamen in AL, and Rollingwoods Macaroon (also by Sleight).

With only six foals Chipper has still managed to get her Dam Legion of Merit. Rollingwoods Lorna Doone earned an Individual Legion of Merit, produced a Legion of Merit (Rollingwoods Who Doone It LOM by Severn Sirocco), and is working on her own Dam Legion of Merit here at Rollingwoods. Rollingwoods Keebie ended up with Sierra Bishop in New York where she was shown to wins in English and Western Pleasure as well as hunter classes. Rollingwoods Raisin Ruckus, Chipper’s only colt, was only green broke to ride and drive when we pulled him out of the pasture to finish the third leg for Chipper. We were delighted when he excelled in halter as well as English and Western pleasure, and ended up being Res. Champion in Adult Western Pleasure. He is now owned and loved by Lydia Ward in Texas and hopefully will attain his own Legion of Merit.
