Ross Davis of Rollingwoods writes...From the beginning, Rollingwoods Farm had a
vet on staff. This enabled us to get mares which might be questionable
breeders in foal. Once
such mare was Heatherstone Chocolate Chip grand-dam of Rollingwoods Lorna Doone.
Lorna Doone is by the incomparable Sleight Of Hand and is a tremendous
performance and halter pony in her own right, having earned her Individual
Legion of Merit, Dam Legion of Merit and Dam Award of Excellence. Joanna
broke Lorna to ride. While Ron Schwartz was breaking her to drive, she
surprised everyone with a pretty little filly, appropriately named Rollingwoods
Who Doone It. Doone has been National Champion in most Divisions for which
she is eligible. Currently she has taken Turner Davis to Reserve Champion
in Walk, Walk Trot and Walk Trot poles. The advice to Turner when he enters the
ring is to keep his hand still and let "Doone" be in charge. Lorna prefers
the broodmare life and her next foals were just as special. Her notable
offspring include Rollingwoods Cookie Thief, herd stallion and Rollingwoods
Double Stuff who was National Champion in English, Western, and Hunter and
possesses his Individual Award of Honor. Other offspring include the
geldings Rollingwoods Cookie Cop and Rollingwoods Cookie Dough who are competing
in the hunter ring and Rollingwoods Catfish Cookies who is currently packing a
small child in the short stirrup division. Her contributions as a
broodmare are legion; however her most wonderful trait is her gentle nature.
Whether it is teaching someone to drive or ride or just babysitting a small
child Lorna is always safe to handle. One reason that Lorna is so safe is
that the word Whoa is the most important one in her vocabulary. She has
endeared herself to children and adults alike who are timid and need a
confidence boost. Lorna is retired now but still teaches the occasional
child to ride or adult to drive. She is fat and happy and hopefully will
continue to produce champions for many years to come.
