SEVERN SIRROCCO LOM/AOE
(Severn West Wind LOM x Severn Holly)
Dr.
Wilburn writes...People spend their lives searching for the perfect pony and
never even get close. For us here at Rollingwoods we were fortunate enough
to own the remarkable pony, Severn Sirocco. Severn Sirocco or Rocky as he was affectionately known was never meant
to be a part of our farm. Ruth found him while visiting Kathy Reese and could
not leave the property without him. She loaded him up and if we had any doubts
about whether or not Welsh ponies were for us, Rocky soon changed our minds.
Rocky was the consummate gentleman. You could send anyone out to his pasture to
look at him or his mares. Throw a new mare out in his pasture and Rocky always
approached quietly and respectfully so as not to frighten the mare. Of course if
you showed up with his supper he would promptly leave an "in season" mare to
eat. Rocky loved to show and was always willing to get on the trailer. Sometimes
he had to ride long hours beneath the shafts of his carriage with a weanling or
yearling next to him with no partitions between. Of course in the breed ring he
was quiet and mannerly sometimes being mistaken for a gelding. Once we used him
as a leadline mount at a large Charity Show for Gail Thomson’s eighteen month
old grandson and didn’t tell anyone he was a stallion. On another occasion he
bred a mare behind the barn and then entered the show ring with the same mare. The driver of the mare parked in the lineup next to Rocky but Rocky was working
and did not give the mare a second glance. Rocky loved Coca Cola’s and would
turn one up and drink it before you could stop him. This little trick created
havoc with the drug screeners so we had to keep an eye on him. Of course all
stallions are only as good as their offspring. Rocky children came into this
world broke and ready to go. If you had the good fortune to break one of them it
was like polishing up the skills of a horse that had not been ridden in a while. Everything came easily and his offspring, like their Dad, won a lot! Altogether
Severn Sirocco sired 34 registered purebred foals and several registered Half
welsh. His purebred foals have amassed 16,674 points. Rocky had a steady wife in
CC Serenade and she produced three of his offspring which allowed him to win
this award, Rollingwoods Classic Rock LOM, Rollingwoods Rockateer LOM, and
Rollingwoods Rockette. Another notable filly is Ozark Let’s Rock LOM who
followed in her Dad’s footsteps as a driving machine and is perfect in the Pet
Pony Obstacle class. Perhaps his most beloved filly is Rollingwoods Who Doone It
who has won in every class offered at Welsh shows as well as in open
competition. Who Doone It has taught numerous children to ride and is currently
taking care of our future, Turner Davis. We are lucky to be a small part of Rocky’s great legacy and know that he is happy in heaven, drinking cokes in knee
deep grass, bragging on his children to whoever will listen. Thank you Rocky for
being an integral part of Rollingwoods.
