SEVERN WEST WIND
1998 Sire Legion of Merit
SEVERN WEST WIND (Severn Storm x Severn Lyric) represents both the culmination and the beginning of Mrs. Iliff's vision of what a Welsh Mountain Pony should look like and should be. His pedigree very quickly goes back to Miss Broderick's Coed Coch Mountain Pony foundation stock in great grandparents Revolt (sire of Coed Coch Glyndwr); Coed Coch Seryddwr, whose most noted offspring was Coed Coch Madog; Coed Coch Eirlys, one of Miss Broderick's own foundation mares; and *Coed Coch Pansi, by Coed Coch Glyndwr, Mrs. Iliff's favorite mare imported in 1948. West Wind's sire Severn Storm (Bowdler Brightlight x Coed Coch Ebrill by Revolt) and his grandsire on his dam's side *Severn High Tide (Coed Coch Seryddwr x *Coed Coch Morfa by Tan‑y‑Bwlch Berwyn) represent Mrs. Iliff's two foundation stallions. West Wind represents the culmination of these two lines.
West Wind was never broken to ride or drive but he was shown to WPCSA Sec. A stallion Champion in1978. He retired from the show ring after that time. As a beginning of a breeding program, West Wind has been influential in determining the type and characteristics of most of the later Severn ponies as well as influencing, through his offspring, other Sec. A breeding programs in this country.
His descendants are excelling at halter, and in performance as evidenced by his six Legion of Merit "legs" and all the other ponies who contributed to his points. West Wind also had winners who made their mark well before the point system was established including such notables as Extra Dividend and Smoke Tree Tamarin. Others of his children have excelled in different venues, including Severn Jolly Cabello, who, as far as we know, is the only Sec. A Welsh competing, placing and sometimes winning the Advanced Pony Division at CDE driving events.
West Wind's legs for his Sire Legion of Merit are Severn Sirrocco (1978‑1997) who needs no introduction, an individual Legion of Merit winner beloved of Rollingwoods Farm; Oak Orchard Joy (foaled 1982), the lovely broodmare bred and shown by Mrs. Wallace Neilson; Severn Donegal, (foaled 1986 and owned by Loafers Lodge), whose halter and performance points are overshadowed by his fabulous disposition; Severn Olympia (foaled 1993), a gem of a young mare; and Loafers Lodge El Nino (foaled 1995) and Severn Coppelia (foaled 1996), both of whom completed their points as two‑year‑olds.
Although West Wind's major contribution has been to Section A ponies, he is in the pedigrees of a few Section B's and half‑Welsh conformation ponies such as Severn Queen of Hearts and Severn Summer Breeze, both of whom have won WPCSA national awards. He also has been the sire of several top hunter ponies over the years including I.C. Blue Shadow, who won Pony Finals honors more than once. At 28 years of age, West Wind doesn't look quite like his younger self, but his personality and his progeny continue to delight us. He will have two foals this year, one at Severn Oaks, and we have plans for him during the coming breeding season!
