TALOMO CRICKET

1997 Sire Legion of Merit

TALOMO CRICKET (Wye Windjammer x Marly Wedgewood) is owned by John Almond.  Margaret Almond has given us some background on Cricket. John first noticed Talomo Cricket as a three year old at a driving club meeting and loved what he saw, so he kept tabs on the pony as he changed homes.  In the fall of 1989 John achieved his goal.  He was the proud owner of Talomo Cricket! When he got home with his prize, I was appalled.  John had paid money for a scarecrow.  We waited two weeks and fed him up a bit before even photographing him to remember the shape we got him in.  With a little tender loving care he bloomed.

Cricket was shown in hand and driving the next summer and did well.  He was Champion stallion when Maryland Pony Breeders awards were presented.  Both his parents were by Farnley Marine, son of the legendary Coed Coch Madog.  In my humble opinion, this degree of inbreeding contributes to Cricket's ability to predictably produce type and movement.  I consider it a further bonus that he can beget solid or roan colored ponies.  The first foal he produced for us was Loafers Lodge Thumbelina out of Legion of Merit dam Glendower Joyful Snowdrop.  This cross was a good one so we repeated it for Loafers Lodge Jiminy Cricket and Loafers Lodge Gepeto.  All three earned "legs" for the sire and the dam Legions of Merit.  We are extremely proud to be the only breeders to have both a sire and dam Legion of Merit winner in production.  The other two ponies contributing to Cricket's award are Loafers Lodge Spring Ahead and Severn Rigel, both out of Severn Capella who is by Severn West Wind.  Cricket has sired twenty purebred Welsh and thirteen half Welsh.  All twenty purebreds contributed to his award.  His partbreds are making their mark in the pony hunter world.  Talomo Cricket has 2703 total points.
