Talybont Quicksilver
2001 Sire Legion of Merit
Talybont Quicksilver was foaled in Nampa, Idaho on June 14, 1973, a son of Shenandoah Silverbelle (Farnley Lustre x Gwarfelin Bouquet) sired by the imported Section B stallion, *Bowdell Buccaneer (Coed Coch Berwynfa x Lydstep Margaret). Talybont Quicksilver, or "Quicky" to his friends, was Junior Champion Colt at the California State Fair Welsh Pony Show in 1974, but never really made his mark in the show ring until 1979 where he was named Western National Champion Sec. B Stallion, defeating both the then Canadian National Champion and the Texas State Champion who were among those in the line up in the stallion class that year. Tragedy struck Quicky's owners the next year and he was offered to Tammy Burgin of Farmore Farms.
Quicky was broken to ride and ready to come out under saddle for the first time; however, it was brought to our attention that a junior was not allowed to show a stallion in ANY class. Adult friends, and even owner Tammy's mom Linda, stepped up to the plate to take Quicky in his halter. Tammy says, "It wasn't until I was old enough to actually show my own pony that the partnership became a match made in heaven. Talybont Quicksilver flourished. He introduced me to multiple disciplines. Previously, I had only ridden Western. Quicky, almost overnight, proved to me he could take me English, Western, jumpers, and trail very successfully. Then the adult hunters became available, along with hunter hack. By then, I had ventured into driving and found that Talybont Quicksilver could do it all, and do it well!
Always kind-hearted, Quicky put 150% effort in the show ring. In and out of the show ring he was a gentleman, and the public loved him at the fairs. Children crowded around him to be able to pet, hug and kiss a Welsh Stallion. Mares were bred to him to reproduce his wonderful temperament among his many other attributes and to produce the much in demand child's pony. Because of this, very few of his colt foals were left entire. However, his most notable son, Farmore Publicity, foaled in 1985 began to prove he could take over in the halter and performance ring for his father."
Quicksilver was not shown after 1988 and was formally retired in 1996 during an evening performance where he was ridden into the ring by a junior (for the first time) and his saddle removed from his back for the final time. His sons and daughters were brought into the ring to say goodbye, and to promise to carry on his winning tradition, his name, and his great heart.
Talybont Quicksilver was put to rest in October 1997 after a year-long battle against the effects of peritonitis. He is greatly missed at Farmore Farms Welsh Ponies. Having his sons/daughters achieve his WPCSA Sire Legion of Merit is a final tribute to their sire, Talybont Quicksilver, may you rest in peace.
