Ruth & Joanna Wilburn
2005 Order of the Dragon for Owners/Breeders
Ruth Wilburn, DVM and Joanna Wilburn, Rollingwoods Farm, are being awarded the Order of the Dragon for Owners and Breeders. This coveted WPCSA award recognizes the breeders and owners of Welsh ponies and cobs who have made a significant and lasting impact on the breed as evidenced by their performance and success in the show ring. The Wilburn sisters have won the award by having bred or owned at the time of winning fifteen Legion of Merit ponies.
Rollingwoods
Farm began with the dream of Ruth Wilburn after a short lived partnership with a
local hunter trainer. She soon persuaded her two sisters, Joanna Wilburn and
Sally Ross Davis, to join her and Rollingwoods Farm was born. As anyone who
deals with the “sisters” regularly can attest, we all have our division of
duties. If you want to talk about how much the ponies eat, go speak with
Joanna; if you want to buy a pony call Sally Ross and if you want
any
money you had better talk to Ruth. Breeding decisions were made initially by
Ruth but sometimes we have those “accident” ponies like WHO DOONE IT that are
products of Joanna and/or fate overriding Ruth’s decisions.
In the beginning Ruth took a trip to Smoke Tree and acquired our first herd stallion Severn Sirocco. His influence is still felt in our herd today and it is his two daughters who have educated and tolerated our future, Turner Davis. It was Rocky’s temperament, versatility and big heart which ensured our path down the slippery slope of pony breeding. Rocky won the very first Individual LOM and later was first to have two LOMs when he won a second one as a Sire. Rocky and his “wife” CC Serenade LOM produced two LOM winners, Rollingwoods Classic Rock and Rollingwoods Rockateer. Rocky, with an “other woman” produced Ozark Let’s Rock.
Our first big break as breeders came from the fact that “with a vet on staff” we could afford animals that other breeders could not get bred. We acquired the pony, Heatherstone Chocolate Chip who produced Rollingwoods Chips Ahoy LOM who produced Rollingwoods Lorna Doone who individually and as a dam has done the most to secure our Order of the Dragon. Lorna has won her Individual LOM, her Dam LOM and her Dam AOE. She has produced Rollingwoods Who Doone It LOM/AOE and Rollingwoods Cookie Thief LOM.
Another prominent broodmare was Gayfields Mona L LOM who gave us our our “first big break into the Hunter” world with the 1994 Small/Medium Green Pony Hunter Rollingwoods Picturesque. She has also give us our current herd sire Rollingwoods Easy As L LOM. Representing a third mare line is our 15th LOM winner, Rollingwoods Stuck On You LOM.
As Joanna is so fond of saying if you take enough ponies you are bound to win some ribbons. We have hauled all over the eastern and Central United States in search of this award. We have met many wonderful friends and ponies and regardless of whether or not we ever breed another pony we have sure enjoyed the ride.
